A Catalogue of Non-standard U.S. Postmarks, 1900-1971

By Randy Stehle and Doug DeRoest

Throughout the 1990s Randy Stehle and Doug DeRoest compiled a listing of over 2,000 US postmarks that violated existing Post Office Department regulations in design characteristics, but were used on 1st class mail between 1900 and 1971. The authors—aided by reports from dozens of La Posta readers—published their findings serially as an illustrated catalogue in 37 instalments between 1990 and 1998.

Tragically, both of these scholars died at an early age before they were able to achieve their ultimate goal of producing a single, revised volume presenting a comprehensive picture of U.S. non-standard postmarks. La Posta Publications has decided to complete the non-standard catalogue project as a tribute to Randy and Doug, and has re-organized the La Posta instalments into a 337 page catalogue complete with town index and full-color illustrations of many of the non-standard postmarks on cards and covers.

The catalogue begins with four introductory chapters explaining in great detail the U. S. Post Office Department regulations concerning use of postmarking and cancelling equipment as they evolved during the early years of the 20th century. The catalogue itself is divided into nine major categories of non-standard postmarks depending upon their design. These are 1) duplex postmarks with integral fancy cancels; 2) Doane cancel mimics; 3) four-bar mimics; 4) duplex that mimic steel hand cancels; 5) machine cancel mimics; 6) postmark dial only; 7) duplex horizontal bar cancels; 8) duplex vertical bar cancels; and 9) wavy line cancels.
